When someone starts looking into CrossFit they often hear a lot about community or “the CrossFit community.” For someone who has never experienced CrossFit the community, it can be a hard thing to understand. What does being a community have to do with working out? No doubt this contributes to the talk of CrossFit being a cult etc. Admittedly, I had my own doubts about training in a group. I was intrigued by the concept of CrossFit, being prepared for any physical challenge, the Olympic weightlifting and the high intensity, quick in & out style of training, but, after years of working out alone I wasn’t sure how comfortable I would be working out in a group. Once I experienced it for myself I realized what the CrossFit community really was and this “community” has helped me take my fitness to the next level. There is plenty of scientific data indicating that people can, and do push themselves harder when working out with a group, but that’s not what this article is about. This article is about an uplifting group of people that want to motivate you and help you reach your fitness goals. It’s not uncommon to hear cheering or encouraging words when someone is struggling to finish a particularly tough WOD (Workout Of the Day) or pushing hard for a personal record on a lift, whether it’s 50lbs or 500lbs.
On the days you were thinking about being lazy, a motivating phone call or text message from another crossfitter asking what time you’re working out that day is a normal occurrence. Everyone in your box (what we call a CrossFit gym) celebrates when you reach a goal or milestone you’ve been working hard for. The bonds you build when you’re sweating and pushing hard for each rep along side someone is hard to explain. When you walk into your box all of the stresses of your everyday life seem to melt away. Political differences, family or relationship problems and egos are left at the door. When in the middle of an intense CrossFit workout you can only focus on the task at hand, finishing that WOD! No one is judging you on your weight, your looks or your performance. If you are consistent, try your best, work hard and, encourage others the way they encourage you, the community will undoubtedly embrace you. The community will help you strive to be a fitter, healthier version of yourself.
Getting through a tough workout together builds camaraderie that often extends outside the gym. Great friendships are forged and you have the opportunity to meet people that you may have never crossed paths with otherwise. Most CrossFit boxes worldwide welcome strangers from other boxes with open arms and love to share stories and information about the different ways other boxes do things. Many CrossFit boxes hold charity events and fundraisers to help a number of great causes. There is no doubt the worldwide CrossFit community is a charitable group! I was born and raised in Galveston, Texas. Being an island, things are a bit different here in Galveston. Us islanders have a little different attitude than most people and within our community at CrossFit Tidal Wave we have strived to create an environment that melds the laid back island attitude, professionalism from experienced, knowledgeable coaches and the friendly competition that is CrossFit’s signature. A person that has never worked out a day in their life is welcomed the same as an experienced athlete. Our community is one that works hard and plays hard. In addition to our tough WODs, we have regular social gatherings and whether at a members house or a local bar/restaurant always have tons of fun! We also try to find ways to bring the CrossFit Tidal Wave community together to help various charities and good causes. We’ve done things such as charity fundraisers, toy drives, beach clean-ups and we regularly support other CrossFit box’s charity events. So what is “The CrossFit Community”? It is a VERY large group of like minded people with an interest in staying fit and healthy, who take a legitimate interest in supporting and encouraging others on their fitness journey, even if those “others” are complete strangers. It’s a group of people who embrace and even appreciate the fact that great results in fitness only come through hard work.
At CrossFit Tidal Wave it’s a group of islanders who are sweating together, getting fit together, helping people and having a lot of fun while doing it. If you really want to experience how awesome the CrossFit community can really be, spend a month or two with us at CrossFit Tidal Wave in Galveston, TX. Our coaches and athletes will welcome you with open arms. Your views on community, fitness and even your entire lifestyle may never be the same.
