Soul Crusher Saturday (Advanced Workout)
This Saturday Galveston Island had another challenging fitness endeavor. CrossFit Tidal Wave unleashed another of the popular Soul Crusher workout series. These workouts are designed to build mental toughness in our athletes having them push through mental barriers.
Mental toughness is important for all Crossfitters, athletes and for life in general. It can allow people to endure hard times and tough workouts in order to strive to become more resilient individuals. Mental toughness is often thought of as part of your personality, a kind of determination that enables someone to do anything that they put their mind to. Also known as resolve, a driven determination that against all odds, that person will achieve what they have set out to achieve.
One of the best ways to train mental toughness is to use exercises that are self limiting. The challenging loads are in low volume and the lighter loads are in high volume.
“The Scandinavian athlete Mikko Salo will, on principle, will never lie on his back after a workout, no matter how completely exhausted he is. He does this because animals lie on their back when defeated. He maintains that it signifies a weak position and that in order for him to stay as strong and as mentally tough as possible, he should always maintain powerful body language.”…. interesting to say the least. The mind is a powerful tool and it absolutely governs your workout performance.
Each workout design has a strategy to it. It one can build a different aspect of mental toughness. If you think about Fran you are in a race to be finished before your body tells you are are finished. When your lungs are screaming at you to stop you mentally push through because you know you only have 60 more seconds to finish.
If you are conversely completing the Murph you need fortitude to keep moving after you have been grinding for 30 minutes knocking out pull ups, pushups, and squats for forever.
